Instead of “Hello, Welcome to Roseville College”, Kindergarten to Year 6 students were hearing this morning’s greeting in French as part of the Junior School’s special French Day yesterday.

Encouraged by French Teacher Mrs Michelle Lye, dressed as a young Marie Antoinette, the students spent the day participating in a variety of theme activities such as Marionette theater, a mini Tour de France, creating Eiffel Tower models from wafers and icing, baking crepes with strawberries and molten chocolate, playing boules in the courtyard, or donning smocks to paint a la di Vinci, Degas and Seurat.
“I started learning French at school and thought, ‘Only such a beautiful language could make ugly words like guillotine sound pretty and delicate!’” explains Mrs Lye.
“I discovered that French was widely used and opened up a very interesting and diverse culture, so I continued French through Senior School and into University; even living in France for a period after completing my degree.”
The opportunity to share the language and culture with Roseville College girls has been a joy for Mrs Lye, who feels that French is a language that connects with girls, especially because of its pronunciation and vocabulary.
Roseville College offers French from Year 3 to Year 12, including cultural and historical tours to France in Senior years.
