For one group of girls, who are very familiar with Ms Snyder’s novels and all nominated her novel “Poison Study” as their favourite, the opportunity to meet the inspiring author was amazing.
“I wouldn’t describe myself as a ‘leisure reader’”, confesses Year 10’s Charlotte Whitworth. “I tend to read because I have to, not for pleasure; but Maria V Snyder is the first author whose books I just can’t put down!”
The notion of Ms Snyder’s books being “page-turners” was shared by Katie Kendall and Laura Kevan of Year 10, who were among a large group of enthusiastic students hoping to have their copies signed by the author herself.
“I’ve also gained a new appreciation of how a writer can use language to develop characters, especially strong female characters,” adds Laura. “She [Maria V Snyder] has fuelled a broader idea of what ‘fantasy’ novels can be beyond the stereotypes that populate bookshops at the moment.”
In addition to sharing about her own stories and creative processes, Maria V Snyder spent time encouraging the students about developing their own writing talents. Katie, like Year 8 student Sophie Riddell and Charlotte, felt personally inspired about her own writing ability. Katie wants to be a writer and says she now sees new possibilities in how she can connect with her readers, “I love the idea of writing something that my readers would love as much as I love Maria’s books.”
Roseville College often welcomes inspiring authors to the College, including Jessica Watson, Erin Vincent, James Moloney and Tara Moss.
